We can't blame you if you missed it, but buried somewhere in the extensive list of over 120 (!) bills crammed on the agenda for today's Judiciary Committee public hearing is Senate Bill 1735, the Senate Republican Caucus-sponsored proposal to eliminate the Evacuation Day and Bunker Hill Day holidays.If you ask us, it's no coincidence that this bill -- which was filed 14 months ago -- is finally coming up for a hearing just a couple of weeks before Evacuation Day (St. Patrick's Day). The timing of the hearing virtually guarantees that we will be stuck with these two wasteful holidays for at least one more year, at a cost of millions of dollars to the state's taxpayers, not to mention the thousands of hours of lost productivity for government workers in Suffolk County who will get these days off.
